i may be wrong
you maybe should check with someone else too
but as far as i know
any dvd drive can copy its contents to a hard drive
give or take some occasional copy protection ritual
i think most sound cards will play the format if you have an app
apps i have work on my pc
jetaudio, zoom, windvd, powerdvd... all of them really
if you have the codecs installed [sometimes extra install]
when you download a 24bit wav you can play it without having a dvd player
even virtualize a drive
so i must be missing the problem?

isn't it the same for 3d video?
you still need a 3d tv (glasses)
but not a 3d player, any bluray player will let you [slysoft] copy to hard drive
and then playit
