Organ Harvest was Radio Massacre International's fourth proper CD, their third studio overall. Organ Harvest was released in 1997 on Centaur, a Scottish label, where all the non-CD-R's RMI did from Frozen North up to The God of Electricity were released. 1997 also marked the beginning of the band's self-released CD-R's, and by the time Organ Harvest came out, they already released Burned & Frozen and Diabolica. That makes it their sixth album if you include the CD-Rs.
The impression I get off Organ Harvest is it's a bit mellower and more atmospheric release than many of their other CDs. "Organ Harvest" starts off with Gary Houghton giving some rather atmospheric guitar works. It can remind you a bit of Ash Ra Tempel here, but oddly I get reminded of that one atmospheric section you find on Finch's Beyond Expression (1976). Then the sequencers kick in, and Duncan Goddard and Steve Dinsdale play their share of great synths and Mellotron, which this album is packed with! Tons of tron strings, flute, and choir. Then the music mellows out with tons of phased Mellotron. "Geiger" has this rather sparse arrangement, with marimba and of course synths and Mellotron. There's lots of stuff going on in the background, from the guitar playing of Gary Houghton, to the Mellotron (presumably from Steve Dinsdale). "Edison" seems to have a more unstructured feel, with more piano than you usually expect from this group, but there's still plenty of great synths and Mellotron. "Rainy Day Song" is back into more familiar sequencer territory, while "A Minute of Silence" shows the band in a rock band format, it was something they would show occasionally on many of their following releases (most notably "The God of Electricity Part 6" off The God of Electricity, naturally), but in full-bloom on Rain Falls in Grey (2007). This piece has a rather Pink Floyd-like feel, as often the case when they do the rock trio format.
Although the title Organ Harvest might sound like something to do with harvesting organs for organ transplants, it could also be a Pink Floyd reference. The "Organ" being one of the dominant instruments that group used, and "Harvest" being the label the band recorded for since Ummagumma.
I first heard about RMI through the Cuneiform release Emissaries (2005), and knowing that it would be easier to pick something up from the Cuneiform catalog than anything RMI came up with on Centaur, I picked up Emissaries. I was not one bit disappointed, and I quickly dug into their back catalog, including several they did while recording for Centaur. And Organ Harvest was one of them. RMI's music isn't the most easy stuff to get into, and Organ Harvest proves that, just requires a few listens. It's another highly recommended CD, recommended to all electronic music fans who hadn't bothered with a Tangerine Dream album since they left Virgin Records, or those not fond of New Age. - BENJAMIN MILER on December 15, 2008
