Arcane - Alterstill.nfo
GENERAL INFORMATION
=====================
Album: Alterstill
Artist: Arcane (aka Paul Lawler)
Year: 2001
Genre: New Age / Electronic / Ambient
DESCRIPTION
==================
Messrs Schreck and Buchloch, enthused by the reaction to the 2nd incarnation of Arcane, have bowed to public demand and released this, a collection of mainly studio pieces which both precede and succeed the existing Arcane releases.
'Alterstill 1' is an incredible track taken from the 'Lupus' sessions, a period where they were further developing their melodic sequential style characterised by their 'Polish' concert tour in the late 70's. The track is quite simply one of the finest melody/sequencer fests you are likely to hear - with biting drum rhythms and crystalline effects inspired by the sub zero temperatures which they often endured on stage. Apparently Schreck commissioned custom built fan heaters to place in front of the modular systems, which didn't improve the tuning that much but at least kept his hands warm while manipulating the sequencer modules.
Onto 'Alterstill 2', a slightly later piece which builds slowly and carefully develops an anthemic theme enhanced by trademark sequencing, the modern edge further influenced by the software sequencing and PPG samples which were in use at the time. This piece and the next 'Alterstill 3' were presented at the triumphant Jodrell Bank concert, and 'Alterstill 3' especially was met by cheers of wonderment such is the power and drive of the music. For this track the band were joined by synth rock-master Marcus Schrew, and Schreck especially expressed concern as to whether Marcus's bombastic approach was perhaps too commercial for the band, but the crowd reaction was emphatic and encouraged the band to release this studio version.
Onto 'Alterstill 4', another track from the 'Lupus' sessions and perhaps the highlight of this set. Starting carefully with classic analogue effects, the piece then bursts into life with electronic syncopations which develop into the most infectious melodies you are ever likely to hear. Further lustre is added by the fact that the melody is picked out in classic Vangelis style, reminiscent of the 'China' period. Rumours abound that it is actually the V man guesting on the track, a story fuelled by their backstage meeting after Vangelis' London Drury Lane concert in '77. Finally we have 'Alterstill 5 - Live at Mount Festival', a piece originally recorded in 1977 on their 'Teach Yourself to Crash Cars' European tour, this particular version recorded at the infamous Milton Keynes Town Hall appearance where 2000 people tried to fit into a venue designed for 300, then rioted when Arcane, not Kraftwerk, walked on stage. This piece underlines how sensational the planned live album would have been, a project sadly cut short by Max Richter's pyrotechnic demise. Rumours abound that the full set of live tapes are still in tact and may yet see the light of day in a subsequent release.
Choose your style - sequencing, melody, atmosphere, rhythm, power, dynamics - any combination, or anything in between. Arcane can produce it all, brilliantly. Buy without hesitation. (GG) http://www.synthmusicdirect.com/altstill.cfm
