Software - Fragrance.nfo
GENERAL INFORMATION
=====================
Album: Fragrance
Artist: Software
Year: 1990
Genre: New Age / Electronic / Berlin-School
DESCRIPTION
==================
Adapted from the review in Zenith Magazine # 3... the Software team for this 1990 CD are Michael Weisser, Klaus Schulze and Georg Stettner, though it is in fact Stettner alone who actually plays on the album. It's really quite an interesting concept, with each track attempting to portray in music a particularly well known fragrance. "The Art of Perfume" the sleeve declares, speaking of which the cover graphics are extremely impressive.
'Woman Pur' opens and is perhaps the highlight of the album. An infectious theme, played on piano and a variety of choral synths, combines beautifully with a choppy bass line and adroit percussion which cuts like a knife. 'Caleche' opens with a distinctive climbing chord before percussion and sequence proceed to interplay with piano which are enjoyable, if a touch repetitive.
'Givenchy III' is a silken tapestry of synthesisers while 'Shalimar' is characterised by a slow, deliberate and quite simple melody which tends to rattle about a bit within its 7+ minutes. 'First' returns to form with a rhythmic outing whose very separate elements combine to great effect. 'Chloe' is another superbly melodic outing very much in the same vein as track 1, with the addition of some very classical elements. 'Fendi' is very evocative but tends to go on a bit, while 'Joy' is another classical track with some wonderful melodies on show. 'Bouquet de Fleures' rounds off the album with a tribute to all the fragrances, with some wonderful sequence patterns forming the perfect backdrop for a reprise of the feature melodies.
Some of the tracks on display here are very characteristic of early 90's Schulze, and had this been released by the great man himself it would probably been hailed as one of his best. Not all the tracks work perfectly, but for the likes of 'Woman Pur' and 'Joy' alone this is highly recommended. (GG) http://www.synthmusicdirect.com/fragranc.cfm
