Occasionally, a book is better in print than on tape, no matter how
expert the reader. Moore's youthful, androgynous voice is perfect for
the teenaged diarist in O'Brien's remarkable Doomsday novel. But the
book, grimly fascinating on the page, reveals distracting weaknesses
read aloud. Its formal prose (using no contractions) becomes awkward
and stilted. And an important element--the narrator's gender is not
revealed at first--is spoiled, not by the performance, but by the packaging;
Christina Moore's name, and the cover illustration, give away the secret.
Still, Moore's well-crafted performance and O'Brien's moving, suspenseful
story go far to make up for these flaws. This is good for car trips--the
plot will enthrall adults, as well as teens.
Soomnething terrible has finally happened. A nuclear holocaust has destroyed
civilization. For one whole year, 16-year-old Ann Burden has lived alone
As she hears the final radio station going off the air, she believes
she is the only person left alive. But when Ann sees smoke from a faraway
campfire, she knows there is at least one other survivor. Soon an incredible
figure wearing a green suit and carrying an oxygen tank appears on the
road. With the intruder in her valley, she makes a chilling discovery:
there are worse things than being alone. Newbery Award-winning author
fiction tale of a young woman determined to survive on her own terms.
Narrator Christina Moore places you on the scene with Ann in a strange
world with an unknown future.
