Is There Sex After Marriage (1972) [soft core]
From Something Weird Video:
LOUIS SHER’s indie company Sherpix was responsible for some of the most trend setting adult movies of the late 1960s and early 70s,ranging from Sexual Freedom in Denmark and Bill Osco’s Mona, to the 3-0 mega-hit The Stewardesses and Andy Warhol’s Lonesome Cowboys. By 1972, the company had widened its scope somewhat - the rock concert movie Popcorn and Peter Watkin’s Punishment Park were stabs at respectability
- but RICHARD P. ROBINSON’S slickly made and surprisingly interesting domestic drama Is There Sex After Marriage was a welcome return to the softcore porn that was Sherpix’s bread-and-butter.
George and Susan Harris are anything but a happily married couple. STEVEN KEATS (Carnal Knowledge) plays George, but relax, it’s not the same Steven Keats from The Friends of Eddie Coyle and Black Sunday; this one looks like Anthony Franciosa. LORI BROWN plays Susan, and she looks like... well, a 70s porn starlet. On his drive to work, George ogles some teenage girls ("You cradle robber!"), and the camera zooms in on a building under construction - a representation of constructive change, as opposed to the destruction of the Harris’ marriage. For a couple of stiffs, Susan and George certainly have some swinging best friends. Martha (Miss CANDY SAMPLES), their voluptuous next-door-neighbor and Susan’s confidante, is fooling around on her husband with Kelly, a young marriage counselor with an English accent. At work, George pals around with Angie, a playboy hipster in eye-watering 70s clothes who takes him to porno movies and strip bars on their lunch break. You don’t need a PhD in psychology to see that Martha and Angie represent the Harris’ ids.0r am I reading too much into this?
George comes home from the movies with a raging case of the hornies. He gets naked and tries to make it with Susan, who rebuffs him by throwing a drink in his face. He slaps her. She locks herself in their bedroom but George breaks in and rapes her. And just to remind the viewers that we’re degenerates for watching this, Robinson intercuts the brutal assault with footage from the porn flick George watched earlier - a bizarre display of self-condemnation, or simply the work of a paranoid Demographer trying to cover his ass? Or am I once again reading too much into this?
Martha eventually convinces Susan to seek "professional help" with her favorite stud Kelly, while George gets it on with one of Angie’s party girls. When the smoke clears and the bedsprings stop squeaking, will George and Susan be able to put their shattered marriage back together? You’ll have to watch Is There Sex After Marriage to find out. Then check out some of Robinson’s other films - The ABCs of Marriage (1970), Adultery for Fun and Profit (1971),and Marriage Is a Four Letter Word (1974). A Demographer who worked out his own marital problems through his films? Or am I reading too much into this? From a 35mm hitched-&-humpin’ print.
