While Panther is a late entry in the Blaxploitation genre Mario Van
Peobles attempts to provide a context for the rise of the Black
Panthers in a style that feels as if it could have been produced in
the 1970s.
The timing of this post is interesting given the current knee jerk
response by most police and conservative groups to Beyonce's Superbowl
performance where berets worn by the dancers were considered as some
sort of tribute to the Black Panthers. I suppose in the end the issue
of the Black Panthers depends upon the perspective of the viewer. Many
consider the Black Panthers as a (pseudo) terrorist group but then
have no issue with Lehi and its derivatives even though much of their
fundamental principles share a common goal thread.
The group itself is an odd story given that one member after returning
from exile eventually was elected to a position in the Republican
Party. One was rumoured to have ordered the murder of a fellow
Panther who impregnanted his wife while he was in prison. To this day
most of the ex-Panthers claim that the philosophy of "rape as a
political weapon" was overblown by the media even though there were
many cases.
What was the truth and what was false? Like all groups I expect there
was as much evil as they could get away with and as much good as was
possible within the constraints of the system they existed in.
Either way Panther clearly wanted to provide a pro-Panther position
and as such ignores any realities that do not fit that ideal. But as
I said history is judged by the perspective of those of the present
and if the Serbs and Croats, plus others, cannot come to resolution
over what is essentially a Serbian loss in 1389 why do we expect a
black revolutionary less than 50 years ago to do better.
