Thanks for posting this.
I don't think VS has deliberately chopped off the vertical image.
Widescreen films are often shot with regular "fullscreen" film and
projected with a gadget that cuts off the top and bottom of the picture.
That way they had something that could be shown on TVs (before they all
became widescreen) but the version with the chopped off top and bottom is
what was shown in theaters and probably represents what the director
intended for you to see.
This movie works a whole lot better as XXX than R. The R rated version
just looks cheap, but the XXX version looks lavish because your
expectations are lower.
I'm going to download your version. I already did the other one and it
looks fantastic.
Posting the Somerset Maugham story was a classy touch. I have the full
collection it came from ("The Trembling of a Leaf") on my Kindle already.
I think this filming of the story is as good as the Joan Crawford
version, and is better than the Rita Hayworth version.
This and "Take Off" are good examples of someone making an adult movie
that was much better than it needed to be. There were a few of those back
in the day.
