Pardon me for jumping in, but do you have a sense of why so many
people have moved from Usenet to Web forums? I have been through
several of them and always find the same unpleasantness.

* File hosts with dubious business models and terrible retention.

* Pressure to either post a ton (and if you joined late, chances are
almost everything has been already--a few dozen members with ~10,000
posts each can cover a lot of bases), give a bitcoin donation, or stay
stuck at a low-grade status level.

* Annoying money-making URL shorteners like AdF.ly and shorte.st.

* Restrictions on what can be posted, as in no slips if the model is
below a certain age and the like.

* Temperamental moderators and admins. I tend to keep a low profile
but have seen more than enough histrionic missives directed at others
to last a lifetime. It is incredible how many people in charge of a
message board take things way too seriously and become (or act like,
or simply are) egocentric, neurotic drama queens.

This is not to complain. It's easy enough to ignore or steer clear of
annoying places on the 'net. I am just curious as to why so many have
opted for them.
