In many cases German troops were billeted with Russian or Ukrainian
families whenever there was a lull in the war of movement. Troops
usually tried to see that "their" family had enough provisions and
maybe a job in the company kitchen and in return the family members
would see to the troops laundry.
Most of the German troops shared their rations with the family.
