Carell is a great writer and he knows his subject (the Eastern Front)
very well. His first book on the Russo-German war (Hitler Move East)
covers the period from the start of 'Operation Barbarossa' to
Stalingrad.
His second book, (Scorched Earth) covers the period after Stalingrad
to late 1944.
One thing about his books is that at the time they were written
(1960s), many of the men he writes about in his books were still alive
and he was able to interview a good portion of them.
It was only through the writings of Carell and others that many long
forgotten acts of bravery like the capture of the bridge at Novgorod
Severskiy and countless other acts of heroism were made known to a new
generation of military history readers.
