The 2cm Flak 38, and the similar and earlier Flak 30, were extensively
employed on the Eastern Front to break up infantry attacks using its
practical rate of fire of 180 to 220 rpm. It was provided with both
highexplosive and armorpiercing ammunition. The latter was effective
against light armored vehicles. The 2cm Flak was also useful against
bunkers, defended buildings, and other field fortifications. The
crewman to the left rear uses a 1-meter EmR 1m stereoscopic
rangefinder (Entfernungsmesser), a surprisingly accurate
distance-measuring device. Note that the gun shield has been
whitewashed and that a white canvas tarp lies nearby for camouflage
and weather protection.
