A Romanian soldier has been killed during heavy fighting on the
steppes. For the Romanians fighting south of Stalingrad, the
battlefield resembled conditions like those fought in the First World
War. Though they attempted in a number of areas to hold the front they
were manifestly incapable of serious resistance as the Red Army was
far superior in strength. Consequently, a mood of fear and despair
gripped them as whole units were either blasted into oblivion or
forced to retreat.
