A machine gun crew tuck into their rations during a pause in the
fighting on the steppe. The soldiers are wearing the snow overall.
This white garment was an early piece of snow clothing. It was long,
which covered the entire service uniform. It was shapeless and had
buttons right down the front and had a deep collar, an attached hood
and long sleeves. The infantryman's leather belt and personal
equipment was worn attached around the outside of the garment in order
to allow better access.
