Manstein's relief operation and Panzergrenadiers hitch a lift on board
a whitewashed Pz.Kpfw.III bound for the Stalingrad pocket. The Germans
had a sixty-mile march to the southern edge of the pocket. Although
the drive went well initially bad weather coupled with low visibility
grounded vital Luftwaffe support. When the column reached the Aksai
River, Panzer crews found that the river was only solid enough to
carry foot soldiers, not tanks
