During fighting on the steppe near the Don River a MG-34 machine
gunner positions his weapon on a bipod inside a bomb crater. During
January 1943 Red Army troops were pressing against the thinning German
front lines circling the city.
German troops and their allies left on the steppe were trying
frantically to prevent the enemy from crushing their forces and
destroying the 6th Army trapped inside the city.
