A German unit temporarily rest during an almost unopposed drive across
the steppes. A 10.5cm artillery gun can be just be seen behind the
resting horse. The 10.5cm gun was used extensively by German forces in
southern Russia during this period.
It was primarily the artillery regiments that were given the task of
destroying enemy positions and fortified defences and of conducting
counter-battery fire prior to an armoured or infantry assault.
