You're absolutely right-I'm reading a book called 'War Without
Garlands' which tells the story of the German troops who were on the
German-Russian border that morning when the war started. One part of
the book tells the story of the Frontier tank battles and how shocked
the German panzer and motorized troops were when they came across some
of the Russian's super-heavy tanks which none of their anti-tank
weapons could penetrate and it turned out that even the fabled 88 had
trouble with at a distance. Below is a quote from the book:
"Three days later Major Kielmansegg spoke to his 6th Division
commander about the first encounter with heavy
Soviet tanks at Rossiene.
we
soberly:
danger of a serious defeat. This was one
and this was three days after the start of the war and all this
because of the giant Soviet tanks.
