No, I'd say definitely not an Essex class - I can't see any large island
superstructure. However, I can see three of the four stub smoke stacks,
similar to those on the San Jacinto in the foreground, and I think that
would make it a sister ship of the Independence-class.
In fact, I believe the carrier in the background is the USS Belleau
Wood, and rather than near Kyushu, the picture was taken while operating
east of Leyte and under kamikaze attack on October 30th 1944. She and
USS San Jacinto were together that day and the kamikaze strike on
Belleau Wood's aft deck cost the lives of 92 of her crew.
