Speaking of outdated software, just curious if any decent comic readers
for Mac come out since I last asked for recommendations? I've done ths
song and dance here at least twice (I think) in the last 5 years or so.
Like newsgroups readers, comic readers is another area where being on
the monority desktop platform is not much fun.
Although my main reading is on iPad (which has a couple of decent
readers), I still manage/review comics on the Mac. Both of my old
standbys (Simple Comic and DrawnStrips Reader) haven't been updated in
a while (SC in nearly a decade) and are failing in multiple ways under
Mohave (10.14).
Maybe Marzipan will be an answer to getting a decent iOS app on the Mac
later this year or next, but in the interim, are there any good Mac
readers out there?
I've been forced to go back to YACReader. Not Mac-like but it works.
YACR was a bit of a pain to setup on my system. Although it makes an
attempt in the plist to register for cbz, cbr and pdf, it fails at the
first two at least as I had to override the supported apps filter just
to make it the default reader for cbr/cbz. The keyboard shortcuts are
decidely unMac-like but it works and even supports very limited
trackpad gestures. I keep DSR around for quicklook support which YAC
does not have.
Pros
- supports WebP
- accelerated graphics support (I haven't tested much but it's fairly
fast on my setup -- at least close to SImple Comic's speed)
- works under 10.14 so far
- supports opening next comic in folder when you finish the current issue
- freeware (I bought DSR and donated to Simple Comic)
- doesn't seem to bug you for donations (only used for a day so far
though). I had to dig around just to find out if it had a donations
page (it does under Help).
Cons
- minimal Mac platform feature support, not a native Mac app (no
quicklook plugin)
- doesn't appear to support RAR v5 (but at least it doesn't silently
fail like Simple Comic when it can't open an archive)
- it's been almost a year since it was updated so while fresher than my
other reader apps, it hasn't been updated for latest RAR version.
Ironically while trying to find the official homepage for the software
I found a tweet for the iOS version beta test with RAR V5 support from
Nov 2018 but no mention of a desktop version update. And no new tweets
since Nov. Hopefully it will continue being updated, but not promising.
