As it never saw combat we will never know if "outperformed" the
Avenger from all vectors including it's armament and ruggedness. The
Avenger earned a tremendous reputation with it's crews for
survivability. As the TBM was only ever used for training there is no
evidence that it was a superior combat aircraft to the Avenger.
