Lindbergh started off badly with his America First
political rallies, then it got worse with his tour of
Germany and praising the Luftwaffe, but it was that single
speech (Iowa, Sept 41) that did him in. His wife begged
him not to make it, but his rant against American Jews
was too much. The country now hated him. After Pearl
Harbor he tried to enlist but the military didn't want
him. He served as a civilian flight instructor in the
Pacific but nothing he could do would gain back his
reputation.
