This particular P-47D was flown by Lt. Harlan Hoyt of the 49th Fighter
Group, 7th Fighter Squadron for all of 5 months. The P-47s were used by
the 49th FG in late 1943 to fill the gap created by worn out P-38E's.
In early 1944 the three 49th FG squadrons (7th, 8th, & 9th) returned to
all P-38J & P-38L status.

Lt. Hoyt was killed flying his P-38L on July 4, 1945 on a strafing
mission in the Cagayan Valley on Luzon in the Philippines. This made
him the last 49th FG fatality of the Philippines Campaign and 35th 49th
FG fighter pilot fatality of the war.
