The first thing you learn when flying in a combat zone is that every square inch
of the country is covered by someone's artillery and you always call for
artillery clearance when flying thru one of the zones. Most times, they'll
report that there's no outgoing...so you continue on your route.
If they say there's outgoing then they give source, direction and 'max ord' (how
high) and you change course accordingly.
I used to fly into Song Be...1st Cav and Spec Forces camp so small the very
short PSP runway was outside the perimeter. Before anyone could land in the
morning, the Cav had to send out infantry to walk the runway and make sure there
were no visible explosives laid out at night by the Viet Cong.
