Netflix has the Frank Capra "Report From
The Aleutians" short, showing what those guys
went thru. As miserable as they were they were
safer than being posted to the Solomons or
N Africa. What it doesn't show is that the
Japanese were far more miserable (being virtually
cut off from resupply). In hindsight the US could
have just bypassed the whole theater, as the
Japanese garrison had no offensive capability.
Their whole operation became moot after the
Midway battle it was meant as a diversion from.
