Welcome back to the series of probably uncirculated audience recordings. So the story goes, Tape Man Joe attended many concerts.
Joe used a Sony D6 with either a Sony 929 or 939 microphone (memories have faded on which exact mic) and TDK metal tapes. Joe
made a few copies and gave them to friends but never actively traded his recordings. Recently Joe lent a few of his masters to
his friend, Jungleland user G (a generous collector himself who has lent tapes from his collection to help upgrade many shows).
G asked me to finish off the transfers and post them.
There have been a few of Joe's Masters that found the light before this series. Most of the time, they are the only known tape
in general circulation (e.g. 1984-09-21, 1985-01-05 and 1988-03-09). The next installment of this series falls into that
category. The circulating version of this shows boarders on unlistenable. It runs too way fast, it's muffled in generations
of poor copies probably dubbed on inferior equipment and it's missing Twist and Shout. Happily all those issues are fixed here.
It's actually pretty hard to believe that it's the same recording.
In fact this is one hell of a recording. This might be Joe's best recording from the Born In The U.S.A. tour that he has
shared so far. It's certainly his best arena tape so far. Bruce is right up front. There's some audience participation but nothing
egregious. There are a couple of minor edits. Joe had to flip twice during the first set and misses the first few seconds of
"Badlands". The seemingly mandatory tape flip between "Pink Cadillac" and "Bobby Jean" misses only part of the count in to
"Bobby Jean"
The setlists from January of 1985 were very similar. A few shows earlier Bruce brought back "Can't Help Falling' In Love With
You" for the first time since 1981. It would have been Elvis' 50th birthday the week before and he was clearly on Bruce's mind
with readings of "Johnny Bye Bye" and "Can't Help Fallin' In Love With You".
Thanks to Tape Man Joe for recording and sharing his tapes and G for transferring the files.
