Welcome to Volume 29 of the DS Archives, one thing that interested me in Dan's archives was that I knew he traded directly with Joe Kivak and I had hopes he had 1st generation copies of a few shows that circulated from Joe's masters but had flaws in the masters that come with age.
There were not too many pre-1975 shows in the early batch of tapes, one that was included was this October 18th show in Passaic. I immediately checked to see if the warping during "Incident On 57th Street" was present and was happy to hear it was not. However, there was ticks present about every 2 seconds or so from what sounded like a loose cable in the transfer. After a few tests I decided I did not have the software on hand to correct this and shelved the show for the time being.
Fast forward six months and adding iZotope RX to the lineup of mastering tools at my disposal has supplied the ability to seamlessly extract the ticks present. After accomplishing this, I realized this was not Kivak's source at all but likely the alternate source mentioned on Brucebase as "some older copies have 'A Love So Fine' missing".
So we do in fact have two distinct sources for this historic show. Both have their issues and both are uneven in spots. The Kivak source has warping on four songs and some distortion in places. This source has some hiss and any attempt to minimize muted the music too much as a trade off so it was left untouched, the hiss is more present in some places than others. It also has at least one significant cut with a big chunk of "Kitty's Back" missing as well as "A Love So Fine" missing completely. This version does not have any warping present with the exception of the patch used during "Kitty's Back" containing the Kivak warping.
I've patched "Saint In The City" (26 seconds), Jungleland (24 seconds) and 8 minutes 16 seconds missing during the second half of "Kitty's Back". I've also added "A Love So Fine" from the Kivak source to make this 100% complete.
Some songs I do prefer this source, even with the hiss, over the Kivak source and other songs I do not, is it an upgrade...in most cases I'd say no unless the master some day surfaces. Samples provided and artwork included...
This is an interesting show, one in which Bruce was to be support for John Sebastian, playing after Dan Fogelberg. But after the Anne Murray fiasco in August in Central Park and watching Bruce do his soundcheck, John Sebastian turned to promoter John Sher and said "There is not a chance in the fucking world that I'm following this! Not a chance, John. There's nothing you can say that will get me to close the show.' And I said, 'Look, you're the headliner.' He said, 'I don't give a shit. I'm not following this!' And so, after I determined that he wasn't screwing around, and he was dead serious, I went backstage and talked to Bruce. And I said, 'Here's what Sebastian said. Will you close? Do you mind?' And of course he didn't mind. He was fine. And Sebastian was great. But Bruce followed him."
Sebastian clearly had great musician instincts!
Though I don't consider this an overall upgrade, it is nice to have another source/perspective of a historic show with such a great story attached to it.
Thanks to the usual suspects, you know them well by now...IvannF, EarlMv, Oats1jvo and Butterking, none of this could happen without each and every one of these folks.
The biggest thanks go to Dan for making his archives available for us all to enjoy...
