The Ev2 version of this show, "A Night Of Singing, Dancing & Howling" is an excellent remaster of the legendary 'Freezer' capture from the fourth row. But as anyone that has heard the show knows, it is marred by Freezer's girlfriend's singing and screaming throughout much (most) of the show. It is an excellent capture but can be a rough listen with the screams overpowering the music on many occasions.
This is NOT a remaster of the fine Ev2 remaster, this is an updated version without any change to the actual music audio, the music is exactly as it is found on the Ev2 release.
What this is, as the description reads, is a girlfriend free version of the show painstakingly and manually extracting as much of the singing & howling as possible only leaving the dancing.
With modern software the ability is there, not always flawlessly, to extract whistles, loud screams and sing-alongs.
One of three scenarios is the result of targeting a whistle, scream or singing:
1) the result is a seamless extraction and you would never know the offending
noise was in the original. This is generally the outcome of whistles
appearing in higher frequencies and lower frequency yells and noises in the
100hz to 500hz range.
2) the result sounds like someone has placed a hand over the persons mouth
stifling a scream or yell. This is at time the result of higher frequency
noises that cover multiple frequencies in the 2khz to 20khz range and
generally span multiple frequencies.
3) some higher frequency yells/screams seem to overpower the music and
the result in these instances is a short swooshing sound to the music of a
second or so, like taking a sponge and wiping a second or so in the higher
frequencies. There are probably a dozen instances of this in the entire
course of the show, none lasting more than a second or less, so maybe 12
seconds in a 3 hour show.
There are instances of all three scenarios above throughout the show, but I believe the number of times it directly affected the music frequencies is tiny in comparison to the number of times in the original the music is overpowered with yelling, screaming, whistling or singing.
In the case of low talking or singing beneath the music, it is many times too intertwined with the music frequencies to extract and could not be removed.
I started out using this show as a test to see how much could be extracted and to hone my skills of removing audience noise, one thing led to another, the obsession gene kicked in and here we are.
This project is the culmination of months of work between other projects, many late nights obsessing over a small sound, extracting, undoing and re-extracting.
After finishing a section I'd put that section on my hi-res player and listen at work the next day making a note of things I wasn't happy with then going back and re-doing that song/area again. Once complete, I re-listened to the entire show making notes of areas I thought I might improve on, worked to improve it and in some cases had good success and other cases I had leave it the way it was.
I really debated on if it should be released since it is outside my normal projects of only releasing original sources but I'm very pleased with the final result. I feel the show is highly listenable now with the vast majority of the distractions no longer distractions.
The original notes for the Ev2 release calls out the quiet portion of "Jungleland" as one of the most annoying sections with numerous screams distracting from the beautiful passage. I have included in the comments a portion of the original screams intact and the same cleaned section for comparison. "Tenth Avenue Freeze-Out" also gets some of the worst of the screaming and howling so I've included three before and after samples in comments as well. New updated artwork is also included.
Art "Freezer" Parr passed away in 2012 and the word is he had disposed of all his master tapes a few years before. I didn't have access to the original recording and felt there was no reason to reinvent the wheel so apologies to Ev2 for using this version but, I didn't feel anyone would be offended by just extracting the noises. Again, the music itself has not been touched.
If you like your bootlegs true to the original, warts and all, then this 'cleaned' version is not for you. But if you want to listen to this show the way it was that night, if you weren't sitting near his girlfriend, then hopefully you'll enjoy this 'cleaned' version.
Thanks to all originally involved in taping and releasing this fine show. I hope this new cleaned version and the effort put into it does it justice.
