JEMS is pleased to present a previously uncirculated master recording of Toronto '78. It's also the fourth release from the work of taper(s) "mackeck".
If you've been following the releases in this series then you know the story but to recap: d.j. mackeck reached out last year to report that his dad had recorded several Bruce shows between 1978 and 1984 in their hometown of Toronto, as well as cities within spitting distance like Detroit and Buffalo. He was kind enough to ship a first batch of three masters and recently supplied a second batch, from which we made fresh transfers here at JEMS South.
The shows were recorded on a small portable recorder with a built-in mic (likely a Toshiba or Sony, but memories have faded) in mono. Though not quite as successful as in subsequent recordings in staying away from audience chatter and noise, he still produces a clear, relatively close, consistent and highly listenable capture of Toronto.
As with the other mackeck masters, this recording again had micro gaps that had to be removed using iZotope RX and it's magical "Spectral Repair" plug-in making them inaudible to the listener.
Mackeck's master misses the first five songs due to late arrival, d.j. mackeck adds a little color to the night:
"First time 'mackeck' taped a Bruce show! My dad saw the show with a friend of his who hadn't seen Bruce yet. Obviously they didn't arrive for the start of the show as the tape indicates. I don't know if they had tickets to begin with, but my dad's friend gave a bottle of booze to someone who worked at the Maple Leaf Gardens. This person got them into the show, and on the floor really close to the stage! My dad's friend thought it was a great show, and never seen anybody like him."
As for the show itself, we are moving into the last third of the tour and though the setlist is somewhat standard for the end of the Darkness tour we do get a rare outing of "Ready Teddy" in the opening slot.
There are two audience sources for this night (actually three but more about that in a future share). As mentioned previously mackeck's source begins about a minute into 'Independence Day'. We've added the missing five songs from a new, low-gen source for the circulating recorder 1 as well as a couple of patches making this show complete. This marks the first time the end of "Prove It All Night" and "Rosalita" in its entirety have been heard.
We've also added as a bonus track a fascinating five minute 1978 interview on with John Hammond on Toronto station CHUM-FM discussing the signing of Bruce to Columbia Records.
Big thanks to d.j. mackeck and his dad for loaning JEMS their masters and recording the show in the first place.
BK for JEMS and mjk5510
