A number of years ago I patched the excellent quality release "Forum Heat" with an alternate second recorder, although later I realized my patch runs a touch slow. I never released the source used for that patch until now.
This is a second recording source of the fantastic Forum show played two days prior to the legendary Roxy broadcast.
The tape for this source comes out of my own archives and had a number of issues that have taken a good amount of time to repair.
I received this source from a Japanese trader back in the early 1980's, the first major issue, after pitch adjusting it, was a very high pitched hum in the 8khz range throughout. Unfortunately, correcting that resulted in flattening the sound so I had to do a touch more eq'ing on this one than I normally prefer.
In addition, there were a number of patches required, "Racing In The Street" is slightly muffled, not even close to the point of unlistenable, but duller than the balance. We have a long patch during the story section of "Growin' Up" due to a number of technical issues and the volume on "The Promise" is low with a good amount of hiss making it lesser quality than the rest of the show. After all the corrections, this is both a very good recording during the full band sections and frustrating during some of the quieter passages due to volume and mid range hiss, most significantly during the "Growin' Up" intro and "The Promise".
For you sharp eared collectors, you'll notice the patches used do not come from 'Forum Heat' but another, third recording source that will be a future 'DS Archives' release. As a matter of fact we will be revisiting this show two additional times for a total of four recording sources.
"Forum Heat" is, and will remain, the go to source for this particular night. Captured by the legendary Mike Millard it simply cannot be bested, we can only hope a clean 1st gen version becomes available at some point since the master is lost to the ages.
This recorder 2 source gives us a new alternate audience perspective for the show, it was clearly captured by a taper that knew what they were doing from a location close to the stage getting an excellent pull with little audience noise. The master would result in a tremendous release and we can only hope will one day appear but until then...on with the show.
This source is already included on "The Multiple Recorder" spreadsheet and noted on Brucebase...we are now up to 366 unique sources for 149 different shows between 1974-1997.
