Apologies if I've inadvertently mis-labeled any of these.
Notes:
It only took a year, but Part 2 is finally here. Unlike Part 1, however, Part 2 does not feature any previously unreleased recordings, so all of these should be familiar to collectors. But, like Part 1, this is formatted to run as one long show, which was a bit more difficult with the way Bruce added more '84 material to the show.
One assumption made while putting this set together is that the listener has both the Stockholm broadcast from July 3 and the soundboard-sourced (or at least audio from the linefeed videos) tracks from Basel (July 14) and Copenhagen (July 25) so none of those sources were used. Based on those three sources, however, you can nearly re-create a show in soundboard quality from summer '88, only missing the portion of the show that starts with "I'm on Fire" and runs through "Glory Days."
I've tried to find performances that best represented the uniqueness of that summer. To that end, notice the two lines from "Tears of a Clown" thrown in at the end of "Tunnel of Love," the inclusion of "Mannish Boy" in the outro of "Adam Raised a Cain," and the passionate reading of "Gimme Shelter" lyics in the outro of "Cover Me." The performances of "Two Faces" and "Backstreets" include extensive intros not heard much on that tour (much less since).
Then, of course, there's the "Land of a Thousand Dances" inclusion in "Light of Day," the story/song intro to "You Can Look," and "Who Do You Love" added to the list of "She's the One" intros.
And, yeah, the transition from Tunnel of Love material to Born in the USA material is represented here: "Downbound Train" and "Bobby Jean" both became staples in the set list, while "Working on the Highway" showed up at the end of the tour. Other songs that harkened back more to the '85 stadium tour than the spring '88 tour included "The River," "Because the Night," "Thunder Road," "Badlands," and "The Promised Land," and even the full band "Born to Run." Bruce even pulled out "Paradise by the C" that summer.
Bruce's switch in material gave the show a much different feel than the earlier shows in the US. Of course, it can also be argued that Bruce's personal life played a huge role in both the change of material as well as the tone of the shows. Either way, Europe '88 was a different animal than previously seen or since.
I've also included Bruce's complete four-song set from the SOS Racisme rally from Paris, France, the night before his own show there.
Hope you enjoy!
Flynn
