Notes:
"Two of Us" attended and taped -- in that order -- a lot of shows on the Tunnel of Love Express Tour. Their priority was to enjoy the show, with the taping being a secondary concern. For that reason, a lot of the shows they taped were incomplete in some fashion; some shows had incomplete songs and other shows had entire songs missing. However, what was on the tapes sounded great. The five shows I've torrented from their tapes -- along with the needed patches -- were the most complete of the shows they recorded.
While it was initially frustrating that these shows -- especially the last five from Madison Square Garden -- were incomplete, I realized they were perfect for creating a compilation from that leg of the tour.
This compilation initially started out as just from the last five shows at the Garden, but then I realized it would take only six more songs to every song from the US leg of the tour. So the scope was expanded and sources other than "Two of Us" were pulled in to make this one comprehensive.
Since that tour featured the most static set lists of Bruce's career, I sequenced the songs to run as one long show. The two different encores -- Detroit Medley being one, the trio of Have Love Will Travel, 10th Avenue Freezeout, and Sweet Soul Music being the other -- are split between two discs.
With such a compilation, finding "bonus" tracks was a bit challenging. The performance of "Walk Like a Man" from the second night of the Cleveland (Richfield, OH) stand featured Bruce delivering a spoken interlude in the middle of the song. I've included three songs from a pre-tour rehearsal tape, none of which were performed over the course of the tour; to date, these three songs still have not been performed with the E Street Band.
Unusual soundchecks were a trademark of the Tunnel of Love Express Tour, and I tried to capture a bit of that by including the two tracks from the May 3 show. And the set wraps up with a soundboard recording of a song from a soundcheck of unknown origin, "Gulf Coast Highway," a song written by Nanci Griffith and released on her 1988 album "Little Love Affairs." The only soundcheck for which a performance of "Gulf Coast Highway" can be confirmed is from JUne 25, 1988, in London, England, and this recording may be from that date.
Hope you enjoy. Part 2 may not be for a while.
