You never know just what Ferl will have tucked up his sleeve!
If you like the film, you'll likely enjoy the novel, too. A fairly
short one, too.
If you like the film and the book, then I'll recommend reading "Be
With You" (Ima, Ai ni Yukimasu) by Takuji Ichikawa, English
translation available on Amazon. The story of a young wife and mother
who returns to visit her husband and son in the spring following her
death. Another exquisite novel, with the same sort of dreamy ethereal
quality as Portrait.
You may be able to find the theatrical film, "Be With You" on Usenet,
and the ten episode miniseries can be downloaded from
http://chauthanh.info (www not needed). Spoken in Japanese, there are
no subtitles with the avi's on that site, but you can get them from
www.d-addicts.com. The avi's and the srt subs are free downloads on
both sites. If you've never been exposed to JDramas, this is an
excellent title to start with.
