The "alternate version" is the original 1945 version, which was never released
to theaters back then. The familiar 1946 version had been recut to enhance
Lauren Bacall's performance; some scenes that perhaps made the plot clearer were
removed. The original version is about 2 minutes longer net. The film was held
back because the studio had a backlog of war movies they wanted to release
before the war ended.
Frankly, I wouldn't mind seeing a composite version someday.
