No, indentations are correct. A quotation mark (usually ">") is added by
each poster. E.g., ">>>>> Several [...]" tells me that there are now five
responses to the thread, or rather, it will be when I send this (unless
someone else posts something before me, in which case this message will
be on the same level as that one, but one step down, so to speak).
The topmost quotes, are added first, by each poster, then the quoted
text. So, for each poster, a new layer of quoting is added, which makes
the indentations look like this.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------
> original
first reply
-------------------------------------------------------------------------
>> original
> first follow-up
second follow-up
-------------------------------------------------------------------------
>>> original
>> first follow-up
>second follow-up
third follow-up
All text from previous posts are copied as quoted text in the new follow-
up, unless you choose to remove it, which one ought to do when it gets
very long.
The less indented lines at the top are the headings for each follow-up
post, but in reverse order, of course. "On bla someone said:" and so on.
For educational purposes I left everything intact, but I usually only
quote the part to which I am responding. Not the rest. This is per Usenet
etiquette to do so, especially in longer threads with many different
topics.
In Pan (my newsreader) it is simple. Select the partial text to which I
am responding, hit F on the keyboard. A new message window appears and I
can start typing. Then Ctrl-Enter to send it off.
Note also my use of [OT] in the Subject, for "Off-topic". We are no
longer discussing vintage film, so... :)
