Handbrake has been recommended by others here in the past, and I
finally started using it to convert dvd and bluray folders to h264 mkv
files a month or so ago.
Most have converted without a problem using the newer version which is
single pass and the size is determined by the quality level rather
than being predefined by the user. (The older version, which
defaulted to dual pass settings, crashed on occasion) But, have been
trying to convert Stepbrothers (2008) the dvd and handbrake 10.1
refuses to do the main movie -- no problem with the extras -- the
movie stops after a few K bytes. So I just downloaded freemake to see
if that might work on Stepbrothers.
Freemake looks like a much simpler (read, less sophisticated with
fewer options and settings) converter than handbrake. And it wouldn't
even list the main movie on the Stepbrothers dvd as an option for
conversion. Only the extra titles (longest is about 22 minutes) are
listed as available for conversion. So I don't know what the problem
is with Stepbrothers, wonder if anyone has successfully converted it
(it plays fine as a dvd title--in fact I was able to convert it in
pieces using the separate vob files with handbrake but I can't join
them into one file).
The link for the freemake download in another message here suggested
that a "toolbar" would be installed by default but that could be
avoided in the installation. The installation required internet
access (my firewall required me to give setup internet access) for
installing all the files (which were not downloaded in the little 1 MB
setup file) and when i selected custom installation it gave me no
options. So I'm suspicious that the "toolbar" may have been installed
regardless. Haven't checked yet, though. Others may want to take
care in installing freemake.
Handbrake appears to be a true open source application and though I
still don't understand all the settings, it seems to be a better
program for someone more serious about conversions. Also looks like
subtitles are not available in freemake without a donation. And I
also get the "freemake.com" advertisement logo embedded in the file at
the end of each conversion as others have mentioned.
