NEW LEADER GOES TO WORK IN INDONESIA
Joko Widodo took the oath of office as Indonesia's
President on October 20. Known for his working class
background, Joko is the first president to be elected from
outside the established political elite. He now leads a
nation with more than 200 million people. The President
faces immediate challenges, not the least of which is
maintaining economic expansion. Infrastructure
As a result, traffic congestion and power shortages hold
the economy back. In addition, Joko faces calls for
industrial reform, including boosting the export of
value-added-products rather than concentrating on raw
materials. One of the President's goals is to make
Indonesia more of a maritime power. He has promised to
connect every port in the country by ferries that will run
24 hours a day. He also has pledged to narrow economic
gaps among cities.
Our reporter in Jakarta will describe the new leader's agenda
and the choices he must make in deciding on priorities.
DANCE REVOLUTION: THE DEBATE OVER JAPAN'S NIGHTLIFE LAWS
People dancing after midnight in Japan might be
surprised to find themselves on the wrong side of the law.
But legislation enacted just after the war makes it
illegal for clubs to stay open past midnight. In reality,
many dance clubs stay open after midnight. But it's hard
for them to call the police when something happens.
Critics say the law may actually be encouraging criminal
acts. More than 150,000 people signed a petition demanding
a change in the law. This week, cabinet members are
expected to decide whether to do so.
We look at the issues involved.
