S. KOREAN COURT ORDERS COMPENSATION
FOR WORKPLACE-RELATED DEATHS
A South Korean appellate court has recognized
claims that conditions at Samsung Electronics led to
the deaths of 2 former employees. The workers had been
exposed to chemicals on the job. Similar claims filed
by 3 other plaintiffs, however, were rejected.
Our report includes an interview with Kong Jeong-ok, a
medical doctor who helps people with work-related health
problems.
SEWAGE SLUDGE BECOMES A TREASURE TROVE
The recycling of sewage sludge may seem like a
dirty business, but it's having beneficial effects in
Japan. In the city of Saga, sludge is being recycled as
fertilizer. Vegetables grown with it are said to taste
better, thanks to increased levels of amino acids. The
city of Kobe is cooperating with companies to produce
biogas from sludge. The gas is used to provide power
for vehicles and homes.
