INTERNATIONAL COMMISSION VOTES ON JAPANESE WHALING
Delegates to the International Whaling Commission
have passed a New Zealand-sponsored draft resolution to
delay the resumption of Japan's research whaling.
The general assembly in Slovenia this week is the first session
since the International Court of Justice ruled against Japan's
program in the Antarctic Ocean.
An Australian academic at Japan's Wakayama University has been
conducting research on whaling in Taiji. Simon Wearne says
whaling has been going on there for more than 200 years and is
an aspect of Japanese culture. Wearne also once filmed a
documentary following the activities of the anti-whaling group
Sea Shepherd. He has some ideas on how to narrow the gap between
advocates of whale conservation and those that see the animals
as resources.
UNIVERSITY IN BANGLADESH OPENS EDUCATION TO WOMEN
FROM ACROSS ASIA
Poverty and gender discrimination have pushed school
enrollment rates of women in South Asia sharply lower than
those of men. The Asian University for Women was set up in
Bangladesh in 2009 to expand opportunities for higher
education. About 500 students from 16 nations are currently
enrolled at the donation-funded institution. Last year, it
produced 134 graduates.
Our story follows students from conflict and poverty-stricken
areas as they set out to make their mark on society.
