There's some good info on API's here:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Application_programming_interface
Basically it allows one program like SickRage, to call another one
like an NZB indexer. The key is unique for each user, and as I
understand it, it tells the indexer who the user is, what the account
settings are (like how many hits per day are allowed, what categories
to search, etc).
If you do nothing but manual searches, you wouldn't need to worry
about it. But if you start automating it like I did, then they come in
handy. There's quite a few free indexers out there that issue API
keys, but most have a per day limit of how many searches can be donw,
and their content isn't as good (hence my issue finding ATK).
