As with a pair or shoes, a good Usenet provider will be one
that fits your needs - which you know best.

If you don't DL all that much, perhaps a block account would
be better than the usual monthly renenwal.

As you've already mention, providers vary by retention,
although anything less than a 1000 days seems unusual these
days, probably more than enough.

Some providers vary their rates by speed, offering a lower
price for slower speeds.

As GXS has mentioned, and a point I'd not considered, is
takedown policy. That's certainly something to consider if
this has been an issue for you.

While having extra time to DL a post hasn't been an issue for
me, nuisance posts certainly has. That's why my main provider
is Easynews. They offer a web interface where you can search
not only by keyword but also by poster, extension, group,
codec, file size, date, and so on. Thumbnails are also
generated, so you will know immediately if a post is not
what's expected. They also unpack archives, then generate a
thumb, so a search can reveal what some XYZ post actually is -
very handy if take downs have been an issue.

Other than Easynews, Supernews, and Giganews are also very
popular.

Once you've determined what you need in a provider, a Google
search will probably reveal rankings that help you find one
that suits. In addition, you'll probably be able to test it
out risk free, since many offer free trials.
