MacPAR deLuxe is what I've used to "unpack" (and recover broken)
downloads for over a decade.  I'm still running an older version but my
wife has DL'ed the latest and seems satisfied with it.  (She's running
a recent version of OSX and usually upgrades OS & apps when the latest
version seems to be stable.)

BTW - OSX is Unix at it's core but you have to go "under the covers" to
get direct access to the Unix functions.  (Using Unix directly has
always given me headaches so I only go there when I have to.)
