If you have Giganews, as I do, you'll find many files damaged. Giga
claims great retention, but they seem to lose way too many bits and
pieces along the way, making their claim of long retention pretty
limp.
I use a backup service to fill those missing pieces. There are many
companies offering block accounts for that purpose. I use
Blocknews.net, and buy about 100G of backup at a time for about
$15.00. Your buy is good until you use it up, and you only use it to
get those missing pieces, not the entire file. You can configure
Agent to do all that searching automatically (I don't know how to
configure other newsreaders, but I assume that most others have a
similar capability.) I can usually get nearly complete files going
back to 2008, with minimal need of PAR's.
If you often find broken files on Giganews, a block account is a
worthwhile investment to avoid the hassle of trying to get reposts of
otherwise recent uploads.
