I've done lots of traveling, from bicycle touring to world
class hotels and restaurants.
Believe it or not, you really can't beat bicycle touring, at
least in North America and Europe. You really experience the
places you visit and can comfortably make just enough mileage
(about 75 miles a day) so that the scenery changes fast enough
that it doesn't become stale.
I don't think it would be much fun to bicycle in a dessert
land, or China for that matter, but it might be good in a
place like Malaysia or Thailand.
As I discovered a little later in life, "World Class" travel
can be surprisingly monotonous. In whatever country you may
be, these hotels and restaurants can seem much the same.
US cities with large ethnic populations can provide a
significant degree of the experience of foreign travel. East
LA isn't that much different from travel in Mexico, at least
in its border towns. Quebec City and Montreal can have much
the flavor or traveling in France, at a fraction of the cost
or inconvenience.
A place like San Francisco with it's plethora of ethnic
communities is a mini planet Earth - and it's a food town to
boot.
Given my down and dirty tastes in travel, I find Anthony
Bourdain's many series most enjoyable. Did you see him in the
recent episode in Iran? Utterly unexpected.
Anyway, travel is one of life's great joys. I hope you
experience every iota you desire.
