The Fall is what you are describing.
As he gets more and more disillusioned with his life, including his job
at Sunshine Desserts, he decides to change things.
He does dump his clothes on the beach and run into the sea, and all
think he is dead.
He re-appears sporting a beard and calling himself Martin Wellborne.
His family all realise it is Reggie, but play along as they see him at
his most content for a long time. This is the Rise (as I see it).
Very good show which (If I recall correctly) spawned a spin-off called
Fairly Secret Army, starring Geoffrey Palmer.
