Classical or not, I enjoyed it. Thanks, nene!
I spent a little time with an online Finnish-English translator, and
figured out that this collection is just what it sounds like --
patriotic songs, with an emphasis on military hymns. The title came up
as "Finland the song rings!," which I suppose might be more colloquially
translated as "The song of Finland rings out!"
The first few lines of the notes say something like this:
"I was born in Finland. Finland is an independent country. In Finland
it is peaceful, safe, and at the moment we are not at war. To win our
independence, Finns had to make war. We Finns are indebted to those who
made war in the past..."
(After that, I got tired of typing all those umlauts into the
translator.)
Are military hymns "classical?" These were written by serious composers
for a serious purpose -- they're not "barracks ballads" like WWII's
"Hitler has only one big ball..." I suppose that military and patriotic
hymns are just as "classical" as religious hymns, so I will give them
the benefit of the doubt.
By the way, Ossi Kinnunen is an alto, not a treble, and reminds me of
Alex Prior. With more training, I think he could sing opera. (I also
thought the solo by his 4-year-old brother on track 4 was unbearably
cute.)
