.. just a short note before popping off on a short holiday (it is the Queens Day tommorrow in Holland) ..
about External Hard Drives (Hard Disks) -
In the past I have been known (jokeingly) among a few as "The Official Archiver" - well the fact is quite simple - I, before many others had already decided to buy several External Hard Drives to copy ALL of my 'mp3s and Audio Files' onto as well as burning most of them at least TWICE onto home DVDs. The life of Home DVDs is not yet certain and without being protected carefully and kept DRY and OUT of direct Sunlight, they may ONLY last as little as just a 'few' uses :-(
Likewise, the life of external Drives may also be quite short. ( In fact, most external Hard Drives are ONLY computer Hard disks in an External Cover) so be careful with storing your Drives and DO NOT leave them for ever CONECTED to a power supply if you are NOT using them.
OK - so back to my initial point - many of you will probably find out that as you collect all of your mp3s onto hard drives AND then begin to sort the Genres (by choir, composer or conductor or whatever) - eventually - when you reach the stage I was at a few years ago, you should find it SO EASY to track down any title or post because Windows allows a search by *** quite easily. This was the ONLY reason I was able to point out CDs and LPs that had been posted before and to warn of certain files as being RE POSTS. Also, when you RIGHT CLICK any file and look at the properties - it will show a DATE or even THREE Dates -
actually "Created - Modified and Accessed" and these allow you to know when you saved them to your computer from the internet. I was NOT being in any way 'An Archivist'.
Finally, it 'MAY' be of interest and some use to any Readers that it is extremely CHEAP these days to 'store' your files on the internet. Companies, such as RAPIDSHARE allow customers to join for any length of time and for quite a cheap cost AND as long as you are a member they KEEP ALL of your Files for ever. Your files can also be well protected with encryption to secure them from theft.
... At the end of the Day, all differences aside, it seems to me so pointless and SAD if all of us have spent and are spending, so much of our time EVERY DAY with our collective treble voices hobby and passion, if, we are only to lose it all because of a broken Hard Drive, or poor quality Home made DVDs. I am so sure many people still have a good fifty years to ENJOY all of this music from the past (the likes of Jeremy even 70 - 80 years) and using all different ways to store it all may prove to have been vital in the future.
Good Luck, success and ENJOY it.
