Coincidentally, I bought the 45 single while I was at boarding school,
also probably around 1956. I had always assumed that the picture on
the cover would have been of the twins. They are certainly dissimilar,
but so were my twin boys. But given the WSK's penchant for apparently
randomly selecting any picture from almost any era, I now have doubts.
The two boys on the cover may not have even been associated with the
WSK in any way whatever.
However, I have an address for Ernst Jankowitsch, and I have emailed
him and included a thumbnail attachment of the cover. When (and if) he
responds, I will post the verdict.
And as for the 10 inch LP (the cover of which you posted), I have that
also, but can we assume that the boys depicted thereon were
responsible for the recorded works? Maybe, but I think it's doubtful.
But at least we can assume that they were WSK members.
I also had, and still have, a similar reel to reel tape recorder. It
takes reels of up to 10 1/2 inches, and uses 1/2 inch tape. I bought
it in the early 1960's. It was regarded as a 'studio' model, and
worked very well until quite recently. Around the late 1970's and
early 1980's I transferred hundreds of classical LP's to tapes, and
with the advent of compact discs, I'm doing it all over again, but I
really don't know why.
Thane's comments a few days ago about the WSK potentially releasing
future albums without including a single fresh recording isn't far
from the truth; in fact, they have been doing it for years. They seem
to throw together compilations from various years, and grab a few
pictures from almost anywhere, and worst of all, include no relevant
or helpful information whatsoever. You would never know if it was
recorded last month or last century.
