AKA "Scrooge"
The producers are pleased to present this holiday classic, fully restored and
re-mastered from the original 35mm negatives discovered in England. Some of
Britain's best filmmakers united to produce one of England's greatest clas-
sics in this, the most well-known and critically-acclaimed version of Charles
Dickens' timeless tale.
With an authentic, dramatic script by later-director Noel Langley, a superb
performance by Alastair Sim and company, and under the careful direction of
Brian Desmond Hurst, the 1951 filmed version of "A Christmas Carol" emerges
as an outstanding cinematic presentation.
Alastair Sim's tour-de-force performance as the ultimate miser, Ebenezer
Scrooge, has almost single-handedly made this beloved version of Charles
Dickens' story into one of the best-loved Christmas films of all time. Some
of Britain's best filmmakers united behind Sim, who was joined by a delight-
ful cast of accomplished and acclaimed English actors; creating what many
today believe to be the best and most faithful production of Dickens'
immortal tale.
"There have been at least eight movie versions (of "A Christmas Carol")
...but the single enduring version is the 1951 film starring Alastair Sim as
Ebenezer Scrooge. ...an incomparable Christmas present." --Gene Shalit

Zaphod Quips: Although not big on Boy content (sorry, that's just the way
Dickens penned it...), The Cratchit Cuties --Tiny Tim and older brother,
Peter-- make a couple of appearances, with Tim always bringing me to tears in
his first scene, where he's disappointed when the toy boat from the shop
window he's looking in on is sold... There's also some street urchins and
singers, and of course "Ignorance."
But it's the story itself, not to mention the great production, that keeps me
coming back year after year (since at least 1975). And I'd have to say that
Christmas just wouldn't be Christmas to me without watching this version.
I usually save it for Christmas Eve, as traditionally one of the local TV
stations always airs it at 11:30pm, Christmas Eve, right after the news, and
that seems the 'right' time.
Of course, Zaphod being Zaphod, he also can be found watching it sometimes
during the heat of June or July... :-P
I will be posting all three of the VCI Entertainment discs that I own, the
60th Anniversary Diamond Edition BD50 & DVD5, and the Deluxe Special Edition
DVD9 that includes both the original B&W, as well as a beautiful Colorized
version.
This is the 2003 release, with both B&W and Colorized versions.
"God Bless Us, Every One!"
