My comments from a Blog post, in another life...
'Tis the Christmas Season, and having just watched this movie again, Zaphod's
mouth runneth over (ewwww :-P )
In the past I've prefaced my synopsis of this film with something along the
lines of "...being short on Cuties...", but after this viewing I must hence-
forth amend those sentiments. There are more than enough Cuties in this
movie, and they get a tad bit more screen time than is required to make it a
worthwhile download!
But beyond that, it is just a really good presentation of the moral behind
Dickens' Christmas Ghost Story.
First off, I'm not a gigantic fan of Kelsey Grammer. Granted, I've seen more
than my fair share of "Frasier" episodes, and laughed at some of the antics
onscreen, and he was occasionally humorous before the series, when he played
the same role on "Cheers," but he's just not what you would call my favorite
actor.
The first time I watched this movie, I was all set to totally dismiss it, but
very soon after starting it, it began to tug at my heart, and as it prog-
ressed I found myself completely absorbed in it -- to the point of tears at
several places. To be honest I can't say that his performance was 'spot-on'
or that he was the quintessential Ebenezer Scrooge (sorry, but to me that
designation will always go to Alastair Sim, the star of the 1951 film
version :) ), but I was definitely affected by his interpretation of the
miserly old skinflint, and by the end of the film I knew that it would hold a
place on my Annual Christmas Lineup. After watching it tonight, however, it
has taken on a whole new meaning for me, and has been elevated several
notches higher on the list than before.
What made this years' viewing different? I can't really say. Perhaps it is
a result of my recent bout of depression. I will confess that I'm feeling
much more my old self right now :)
Now on to the Cuties!
What can I say about Jacob Moriarty, who plays Tiny Tim? Well, let's put it
this way: At the time of this writing, it's been almost two hours since the
movie ended, and I'm still scraping pieces of my EXPLODED HEAD off the walls!
This little man totally captivated me from the moment he first appeared
onscreen at the 14:52 mark. He is so adorable, and seems to have the perfect
temperament for the character of the meek, mild-mannered little Tim.
Joseph Tremain's "Jonathan," the little street urchin that Scrooge encounters
three times during the film, has such a bubbly, exuberant personality and his
short time on screen never fails to make me smile.
The other Cuties that appear, Josh Wilmott as Scrooge at 10-years-old, an
uncredited Cutie (as Fred's Son?), and miscellaneous background characters
don't have very long in front of the camera, but there are some truly beau-
tiful little faces to be seen :)
Alright, that's the sales pitch. Now it's up to you to make the (right!)
decision and grab this great little movie.
I'm serious, folks -- Download and watch this, if for nothing else to but to
come back here and tell me that I'm full of, err... Eggnog, and that it was
the most worthless piece of cruft you've ever seen!
If you're not more than a little touched by either the message or its presen-
tation, then you're more of a Grinch than, well, The Grinch!
Note: There are English Closed-Captions present on the disc, but I could not
get them to display in either VLC or MediaPlayer Classic HC. TotalMedia
Theatre 6 picked them up and displayed them by default, though...
I can't really add anything new to the above, other than to further encourage
you to download and watch this!
Oh, yeah, there is one thing - WHY HAVE THEY NOT RELEASED THIS ON BLU-RAY???
